It's time to review the true status of the football rivalry between Michigan State and Michigan. Wolverine fans are constantly bragging about their "all-time wins record", but to do so, they are actually counting rugby scrimmages from the late 1800s as "football". Let's take a look at the last ten years of the series.
Last 10 Football Games Between MSU and UM
- Ten Game Record = MSU 5, UM 5
- Non-Overtime Record = MSU 4, UM 3
- Total Points = MSU 267, UM 228 (MSU + 39)
SEASON RESULTS OVER LAST DECADE
- MSU TEN YEAR TOTAL = 73-50 (.594)
- Six bowl games, two wins
- Current Bowl Games in a row = 6
- Biggest Bowl Win Streak = 2
- League Championships = 1
- Division Titles = 1
- UM TEN YEAR TOTAL = 76-46 (.623)
- Nine bowl games, two wins
- Current Bowl Games in a row = 3
- Biggest Bowl Win Streak = 1
- League Championships = 1
- Division Titles = 0
BOTTOM LINE: Michigan State has a better bowl streak in progress, as well as a better bowl-win streak. Seems that MSU has "measured up" with league championships and division titles over the last decade. The series is tied in wins/losses, and the Spartans lead in points scored.

This is very good, very accurate, very comprehensive. Such so that I hesitate to make the following suggestion.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it would improve this to include the records, etc. for the current coaches and the current seniors (or red-shirt seniors)? After all, they are who we are watching today.
We can do that. I will be updating the "Master Article" in this series each week to reflect current data, as well as posting an updated bullet-point-article with the decade-based information. I can add those elements in.
ReplyDeleteThe red-shirt senior data basically comprises a five-year span, and this series was targeted at the ten-year span, but I'll start adding those data-points next week.
I think we've reached a milestone in the series against UM, as we can now point to a full decade of parity.
