Statistically, No One Better Than Izzo in THE DANCE. Details Here:

This is a great story I've been saving up for this moment...

Statistically, if your team is a one seed, you should make it to the Final Four.
If you are a 2-seed, You should make it to the Great Eight.
Then it get's into fractions with a 3-seed. And a 4-seed should make it to the sweet sixteen. And so on...

A geek calculated the success of coaches against this formula over time. His findings?
Izzo is THE MAN, by a long shot!

Check out the story here. The reader comments are amusing too.

WOLVERINES RESURRECTED BY NATIONAL SPORTS MEDIA

For those of you who thought the Michigan Men's Basketball team was eliminated from the B1G Conference tournament yesterday, get ready for a BIG SURPRISE.

According to the national sports media, based on a simple google-search, it was actually the "Wolverines" who seized a late lead to defeat Iowa last night, advancing to the semi-final round today. Sound crazy? It is. Are you used to it yet? We are.

If you don't believe it, try googling "msu vs iowa" right now, before it's caught and corrected. Here's what we found when we did just that:

News for msu vs iowa

Michigan State vsIowa final score: Wolverines seize lead late, win 59-56
SB Nation - 12 hours ago - 405 related articles »
The Michigan St. Spartans roared back against Iowa to win 59-56, overcoming a 12-point second half deficit to continue on to the Big Ten ...

Okay, that's just a google-search "blunder"(?), bad enough, but maybe the article itself had things right. WRONG! Here is a link to the actual article:

The Michigan State University Wolverines

In case the entire article is corrected by the time you read this post, check the comments at the bottom of the article. In case those are deleted, here they are:

Michigan State Wolverines?

Who writes this crap? It’s bad enough that Michigan was ranked above Michigan State all season, even after State beat them by 23 points. Michigan State is the basketball power in the state of Michigan. Let’s show a little respect.
Phil Mitten

should probably change the teaser headline also...

Half Ass corrections

When I wrote my first post, all references to MSU referred to them as Wolverines. Then someone made a half ass attempt to correct the blunder by changing the headline and first line to Spartans and not taking the time to correct the rest of the errors, including the teaser.
This whole site is crap. Once I finally got back to this article to see if it was corrected, after I signed in it took me back to the home page and I had to find this article all over again. They do not even have a link to college basketball on their home page, and this is friggin March!!!

Many people will tell you that we are "obsessed" with Michigan, that we are "haters", that we define our own existence by what that other team does and doesn't do. What about REALITY? How many times have we all heard our team referred to as "Michigan" on televised sports broadcasts? In my life, more than 100 instances over the years.

What is it that UM does to cast the hocus-pocus spell on the local, state, and national media? Is it a silly pose in the end-zone after a touchdown by an overrated receiver? Is it the silly pep song that gets played over and over and over again, ad infinitum? Is it, dare I say......money?

When you find these sports media distortions, please bring them to our attention, because yes, we are keeping track.

BUCKY DUMPS THE chUMps - AGAIN

Wisconsin just knocked Michigan out of the B1G Conference tournament, with a convincing 68-59 victory. The Badgers played Bucky-Ball in the first half, holding UM to 20 points and trailing by only three. The Weasels were obviously out-coached, as the game was played at a Wisconsin tempo.

Yet in the closing seconds of the game, when the outcome was certain, the announcers were carrying on about what a great coach John Beilein is, especially with offensive strategy. Huh? His team was held to 20 in the first half. Who was the "great coach" in this game?

As the final horn sounded, a graphic appeared under a shot of Bo Ryan, showing that he had just won his 12th game against Beilein in 13 meetings. Huh? The announcers were heralding the chUMp leader, even as his team was dropping its second out of three games.

We all know the lesson; that Michigan is great when they win, and they are great when they lose. Or sometimes when they lose, it's because they weren't playing "Michigan basketball". Good grief.

Remember the big story a week ago, with all of the questions to Spartan fans about rooting for UM against Indiana? How well did that strategy turn out? Looks like our advice to avoid rooting for the arch-rival made much more sense, as the loss to the Hoosiers bumped Michigan to a 5-seed in the conference tournament, leaving them in blue uniforms against Wisconsin, and sending them home on Friday afternoon.

SPARTANS WIN COMBINED CONFERENCE BASKETBALL TITLE

The B1G Conference Basketball regular season has concluded with the Michigan State Spartans at the top of the combined league standings. The MSU Men's team finished in second place while the MSU Women's team finished in third place. Their combined record of 23-11 is best among all teams.

1.    23-11     Michigan State
2.    21-13     Michigan
3.    20-14     Ohio State
4.    18-16     Purdue
5.    17-17     Iowa
       17-17     Illinois
       17-17     Nebraska
8.    16-18     Indiana
       16-18     Penn State
10.  15-19     Wisconsin
       15-19     Minnesota
12.    9-25     Northwestern

The two-game separation between MSU and UM is misleading, as the Spartans won three out of five games between the teams, losing twice by only a single point. Michigan State outscored Michigan in basketball this year by 52 points in five meetings.

SPARTAN WOMEN SEND WOLVERINES BACK HOME

The Michigan State Women's Basketball team knocked Michigan out of the Big Ten Tournament tonight, with a 62-46 victory. It was the third meeting between the teams in the past 32 days, with MSU winning in East Lansing and Chicago.

The game was preceded by UM's one-point win over the Spartans in Ann Arbor three weeks ago, the Wolverine's first win over their rival in five years. Suzy Merchant's team has outscored Michigan by 30 points in three games this season.

MSU Junior Klarissa Bell turned a spotlight on this matchup, with pre-game bulletin board material that would have made Bobby Knight cringe. Bell spoke earlier this week about the possibility of meeting her team's rival in the second round of the the conference tournament.

"If we play Michigan again, it is on," Bell said. "That's all I have to say. We should not have lost to them. I should have had a better game than what I had. It's on. I challenge them. It's on. I'm ready."

Bell backed up her blusterous bravado by scoring the first four points of the game, finishing with a game-high 20 points. The Spartans never trailed on the scoreboard, en route to their 23rd win of the season.

Five Michigan Seniors finish their B1G Basketball career with only the single one-point win over Michigan State in 10 contests. Those five rank at the top of the minutes-played list for UM this year, four of them starting in tonight's game and scoring 34 of their team's 41 points. By comparison, MSU loses just two Seniors to graduation, Jasmine Thomas and Courtney Shiffauer, who combined for 10 points and seven rebounds in the game.

The Spartan Women move on to the conference semi-finals Saturday night, with an NCAA tournament invitation already on the way to the print shop. They have defeated Michigan 21 times in the last 23 games. MSU leads the all-time series against UM, 62-16.

Spartan Man 82's One and Only Commandment

So now what do you do, Spartan fans?  I know what I do.  Obey the one and only commandment which is "UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ROOT FOR MICHIGAN TO WIN".

I know, I know, a win by the chUMps over Indiana would give Sparty another Big Ten Co-Championship but an Indiana win would 1) prevent an undefeated home record for the chUMps and 2) prevent the chUMps from sharing the aforementioned co-championship.

So I had to ask myself which tastes sweeter.  Another banner in Jennison, I mean Breslin or preventing one at Chrysler or Chrisler, whatever.  (Sorry, I graduated in 1979 and saw all of Magic's home games in the barn and the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games against Pennsylvania and Notre Dame in Indy.)  I looked ahead to this weekend and had to imagine watching that game in the arena where they can only get 2 of 3 students to wear that ugliest of neon puke t-shirt.  Even if I had a bet on Michigan I know I would be pulling for Indiana.

If Sparty were meant to win another conference championship they would have won any of the five losses that were all within reach.  We look like we have championship teams the next couple of years.  Even after listening to Billy Packer and his sidekick praise the chUMp freshman class I like ours so much more.

Here's a thought going into the one and done seasons.  We are the highest ranked seven loss team.  And four of those are to teams who will grab #1 or #2 seed in the big dance.  A fifth will likely grab a #3 seed.  We have no truly bad losses.  And on a neutral court who knows how far we can go this year.

GO HOOSIERS!

The Maxwell Conspiracy and the Bucknell Bison

Brace yourself for story upon story on the MSU quarterback "situation". Everyone seems to favor the QB not named Maxwell. As you hear about developments and engage in conversation, keep this in mind...

I still maintain that there were so many things wrong last year that none of the QBs would have looked good in 2012 and whoever was QB, we would be calling for the other in 2013. Even if it would have been Kurt Cousins for another year in 2012, instead of Maxwell, the message boards would be filled with, "I'm glad he is gone. I never liked him. Just because he gives a good speech doesn't mean he is a good QB." - and people would be all fired up about Maxwell finally getting a chance. Now - we may have won a couple of the close games, but the fan base would not have been happy with the ugly offense.

As it was, Maxwell did not perform well and did NOT earn a locked in #1 QB slot for 2013. I just hope people are sophisticated enough to know all the QB candidates would have sucked last year - just as Maxwell truly did, no doubt. The offense is an eco-system and the system was polluted on so many levels even a good QB would not have looked so good. I'll go with whomever the coaches select. I hope Spartan Nation is mature enough to do the same.

A former Bucknell Bison will call plays for the Spartans this fall. The parents of Return2Glory met at Bucknell. Mr. R2G held many track records at Bucknell, was an outstanding pitcher there and may have made an impact on the football field as a RB had it not been for a broken leg suffered on the final play of a practice his freshman year. Michigan State co-offensive coordinator Dave Warner, back in the saddle again
