The conference championship basketball game played Sunday between Michigan State and Michigan marked the fifth time that MSU and UM have played basketball this season (twice in the post-season tournaments). By winning, the Spartans clinched the 2014 basketball series, 3-2.
Both MSU Basketball teams knocked their UM counterparts out of the B1G conference tournament this month. Suzy Merchant coached the Spartans to a 72-69 win over Michigan in the second round of the women's tournament on March 7. Tom Izzo coached the Spartans to a 69-54 victory over UM in the championship game on Sunday. Michigan State defeated Michigan in Crisler arena in January in the only meeting of the season between the women's teams.
