REMINDERS FOR FANS OF UM BASKETBALL

THIS IS "BEILEIN MONTH"
Next week is "Shembechler Week"
(this article was originally published on 4-9-15)

The bitter Michigan fan-base is trying to make Spartan fans feel bad about basketball, despite their own belly-up performance in 2015. We predicted this several days ago. Our expectation was not based on losing in the semi-final, or even the final game of the Big Dance. We knew that even if MSU won the national title, UM fans would make up claims against us, trying to make themselves feel better by making us feel worse.

WELL IT'S NOT GOING TO WORK, YOU SILLY chUMps. There is no need for Spartan fans to feel bad about our basketball program, either Men's or Women's, and certainly not by comparison to the University of Michigan.

You will find a lot of information on this web site that can be used at the water-cooler and the bus-stop and the lunch-room. We will now begin to assemble some more factual data that can be used to put the chUMps in their place.

  • Michigan won a total of three (3) games in the months of February and March COMBINED this season.
  • UM's last two wins of the season were against Rutgers and Illinois.
  • The Wolverines finished in 9th-place in the conference.
  • Texas Southern made the NCAA Tournament, Michigan didn't.
  • The Wolverines were ranked #23 in the pre-season, and they finished #71 (by Sagarin).
  • Michigan finished its season on March 13, losing in the quarterfinals of their conference tournament.

That's awesome, baby! You can see why the chUMps are out in full force, trying to tear down the Tom Izzo program. Compare the facts above to the corresponding MSU facts below:

  • Michigan State won a total of thirteen (13) games in the months of February and March this season.
  • MSU's last two wins of the season were against #3-seed Oklahoma and #4-seed Louisville.
  • Michigan State finished in 3rd-place in the conference.
  • The Spartans made the NCAA Tournament, the Wolverines missed the N.I.T.
  • Michigan State was ranked #18 in the preseason, and they finished #7 (AP).
  • MSU finished its season on April 4, losing in the semi-finals of the NCAA Tournament.

There, now we all knew the facts listed above, as we all saw it happen. But the chUMps want to step in and distract us from reality, in favor of their delusional fantasies. Don't let it happen! Don't sit there and just "take it" from the chUMps!

When they spew nonsense, answer them with FACTS!

MICHIGAN TAKES LOSING RECORD INTO B1G TOURNEY, NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY

THIS IS "BEILEIN MONTH"
Next week is "Shembechler Week"
(this article was originally published on 3-12-15)

The final focus for the Michigan basketball team is to raise their season record to at least the ".500" mark after finishing play in the B1G Conference Tournament. To do so, they must win at least two games, as they are currently one game below .500.

But they keep wanting you to believe
that they are already at .500 based on
their exhibition-game victory over
Hillsdale College in mid-November.

What's truly amazing is how the sports-media takes their Bright Shining Lie and eats it right up. Nearly everybody is reporting the UM season record as 15-15, but the farther away you get from Ann Arbor, the more likely you are to find the truth.

For example, check out the Sagarin Rankings, published for the past several decades by USA Today. According to Sagarin, the Wolverines are 14-15 right now:

CURRENT SAGARIN RANKINGS - MICHIGAN @ #77

Did you see their season record listed at 14-15? For a close-up view, look here:

MICHIGAN SEASON RECORD OFFICIALLY 14-15

You can also check the Hillsdale College athletic web site, where their recap of their game against UM includes the following language:

"The Chargers made the Wolverines work and sweat in a game Michigan pulled away to win in the second half 92-68 at Crisler Arena. Hillsdale gets its season officially started Tuesday, Nov. 25 in a non-conference game at Cedarville."

It looks like Hillsdale College didn't consider the game to be "official" on their end. If you look at the Hillsdale College men's basketball schedule/results page, you will see 14 total losses on the list, but an "official" season record of 13-13. EVEN HILLSDALE COLLEGE DOESN'T COUNT THE GAME ON THEIR SEASON RECORD.

Once again, those "amusing" folks down at the University of Michigan are trying to artificially pump-up their public reputation, polishing up their image by creating the illusion of dominance. Or in this case, mediocrity.

MICHIGAN CONFIRMS "ELITE PROGRAM" STATUS WITH HOME-COURT THRASHING OF RUTGERS ON "REDSHIRT-JUNIOR DAY"

THIS IS "BEILEIN MONTH"
Next week is "Shembechler Week"
(this article was originally published on 3-7-15)

What a remarkable season it's been for the Michigan men's basketball team.

As the defending (regular season) league champions, they opened play as a Top 25 team with expectations of "making a deep run" into the Big Dance after winning another B1G title. After all, they had achieved "Elite Program" status based on the last three years, right? That's what their fans have been telling us ever since a pair of one-point wins created a pair of three-game win-streaks in the MSU-UM rivalry series.

As the season played out, we could see clearly what it is that makes up an "Elite Program". Things like these:

As notable as some of these achievements may be, they are merely some of the ingredients of an "Elite Program". You can read all about the greatness of UM in the mainstream sports media, as they'll be sure to tell you it's a veritable "Camelot" in Ann Arbor.

So congrats to the Michigan Wolverines on another outstanding season of men's basketball!

WHY DOES MICHIGAN KEEP TRYING TO COUNT THE HILLSDALE COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAME AS A VALID DIVISION-ONE VICTORY?

Next week is "Shembechler Week"
THIS IS "BEILEIN MONTH"
(Originally published on 3-5-15)

Okay, let's face it, times are tough for University of Michigan Basketball. Their women's team just got bumped from the league tourney by Michigan State, and their men's team is still digging into their own heads to discover just how they could blow a six-point lead with 16 seconds left at Northwestern. They probably feel like conjuring up an extra win or two out of thin air.

That's exactly what they are doing by counting their men's game against Hillsdale College as if it were a regular-season victory. That should always have been regarded as an "exhibition game". Folks everywhere are forced to constantly rectify the UM season record by subtracting that "win".

Hillsdale College is not a D-1 school.

As usual, we now move forward to prove our point with factual information. MSU played a game against Hillsdale College in the 2011-2012 season, and it was considered by all to be an exhibition game. Here's the proof:

Hillsdale College is a Divsion-2 school with less than 1500 students, and when Division-1 schools play them, it is known as an "exhibition game". There is no reasonable explanation for why the University of Michigan is trying pass off one of their exhibition games as a regular-season contest. It seems likely that they are just padding their record, trying to pump themselves up without cause. As usual, right?

NO MORE RIVALRY "WIN STREAK TRASH-TALK" FOR MICHIGAN BASKETBALL FANS

July is "Beilein Month"
(Originally published on 2-20-15)

That obnoxious yapping sound we've all heard for the past couple of years has finally been extinguished. It was the sound of arrogance, coming from fans of Michigan Basketball.

Their favorite team "stole a game" from Michigan State, twice by a single point over the past several years. Those two narrow victories were each in sequence with two single-digit UM wins over MSU, creating a pair of three-game win-streaks. This led to the "six-out-of-eight" crowing that turned into "six-of-nine" and then "six-of-ten".

It appears that the Arrogant Automatons have now run out of fuel for their glorious fantasies. Those two one-point wins were the basis of their claims that the Michigan Basketball Program was "better than" the one at Michigan State, and even that John Beilein is "better than" Tom IzzoThose folks couldn't accept their surprising upsets with dignity and class, instead making bold and audacious claims to explain their lucky wins.

We recently summarized the last 25 games between the two teams to see the macro-picture of the rivalry series. Now we take a micro-picture of the "streaks" by both teams over that 25-game span, covering the last 13 years. Take a look at the list below to see every streak up to 25 starting from NOW.

The last 25 games are arranged in reverse-chronological order, with the most recent game at the top. (The date and score of each game is included.) The bolded text shows what the streak is, for either team, as of TODAY. There is no longer any need to cherry-pick the number of games to be described, as all 25 are listed below. Those who wish to count up the last four, or the last 13, or the last 22, or whatever, may simply refer to this list:

  1. MSU- 1 of the last 1  (2-17-15) MSU by 13
  2. MSU- 2 of the last 2  (2-01-15) MSU by 10
  3. MSU- 3 of the last 3  (3-16-14) MSU by 14
  4. MSU- 3 of the last 4  (2-23-14) UM by 9
  5. MSU- 3 of the last 5  (1-25-14) UM by 5
  6. Tied- 3 of the last 6  (3-03-13) UM by 1
  7. MSU- 4 of the last 7  (2-12-13) MSU by 23
  8. MSU- 5 of the last 8  (2-05-12) MSU by 10
  9. MSU- 5 of the last 9  (1-17-12) UM by 1
  10. Tied- 5 of the last 10  (3-05-11) UM by 7
  11. UM  - 6 of the last 11  (1-27-11) UM by 4
  12. Tied- 6 of the last 12  (3-07-10) MSU by 16
  13. MSU- 7 of the last 13  (1-26-10) MSU by 1
  14. MSU- 8 of the last 14  (2-10-09) MSU by 12
  15. MSU- 9 of the last 15  (1-27-08) MSU by 15
  16. MSU- 9 of the last 16  (2-27-07) UM by 11
  17. MSU- 10 of the last 17  (2-13-07) MSU by 15
  18. MSU- 11 of the last 18  (2-18-06) MSU by 19
  19. MSU- 11 of the last 19  (1-25-06) UM by 5
  20. MSU- 12 of the last 20  (2-12-05) MSU by 15
  21. MSU- 13 of the last 21  (1-27-05) MSU by 11
  22. MSU- 14 of the last 22  (2-24-04) MSU by 3
  23. MSU- 15 of the last 23  (1-17-04) MSU by 17
  24. MSU- 15 of the last 24  (1-26-03) UM by 2
  25. MSU- 16 of the last 25   (1-30-02) MSU by 27

Rather than cherry-picking the length of your favorite streak, we recommend counting streaks in five-game increments. For that reason, we have slightly highlighted those five-game increments in light red.

There is only one "streak" going back 25 games
in which Michigan leads Michigan State.

In the last 11 games, UM holds a 6-5 lead.
There are also three ties.

The other 21 measuring-sticks
ALL FAVOR THE SPARTANS.

We call for an end to the prideful boasting and arrogance from Ann Arbor based only on a pair of one-point victories. Congratulations to them and their team when they win a game or two, and for bringing their program up to "par" with the rest of the conference. We don't need to laugh at them for having a down season, but they really ought to shut up about their rare and narrow wins over MSU.

UPDATED RIVALRY STATS: THE LAST 25 BASKETBALL GAMES BETWEEN MSU & UM

July is "Beilein Month"
Originally published on 2-18-15

It appears as if the Michigan Basketball "mini-run" against Michigan State has come to an end. It now looks like little more than a statistical aberration, keyed by a pair of one-point wins that formed two three-game win streaks by UM over MSU. Take away those "mini-wins" and you take away the "mini-run".

Remember that "six-out-of-the-last-eight" crowd from last year? Michigan fans used the eight-game span because it served them well, but they were forced to change. They became the "six-out-of-the-last-nine" group, and most recently, the "six-out-of-the-last-ten" coalition. They are now the "six-out-of-the-last-eleven" committee.

We take it a bit farther, going back 25 games in the basketball series between Michigan State and Michigan. The current "break-point", the number of recent games in which the series is even, is 10. In the last 10 games, the series is tied, 5-5The flavor of the rivalry can be defined by the point-margins of victory. 14 of the last 25 games have been double-digit wins for MSU, while the last four UM wins have been by a combined total of 16 points.

So UM has won 6 of the last 11.
They have also won 6 of the last 15.

Our 25-game span covers 14 years, a time-frame that offers a good medium-range view of the series. Some would like a shorter viewpoint, so we've broken those 25 games into five sequential five-game sets. (You can get a good sense of the series by viewing it in five-game intervals.)

Here are the outcomes of the last 25 games between MSU and UM in Men's Basketball, listed in chronological order with the winner and final margin (bottom = most recent):

(1-30-02) MSU by 27
(1-26-03) UM by 2
(1-17-04) MSU by 17
(2-24-04) MSU by 3
(1-27-05) MSU by 11
  • MSU 4-1 in games
  • MSU +56 points

(2-12-05) MSU by 15
(1-25-06) UM by 5
(2-18-06) MSU by 19
(2-13-07) MSU by 15
(2-27-07) UM by 11
  • MSU 3-2 in games
  • MSU +33 points

(1-27-08) MSU by 15
(2-10-09) MSU by 12
(1-26-10) MSU by 1
(3-07-10) MSU by 16
(1-27-11) UM by 4
  • MSU 4-1 in games
  • MSU +40 points

(3-05-11) UM by 7
(1-17-12) UM by 1
(2-05-12) MSU by 10
(2-12-13) MSU by 23
(3-03-13) UM by 1
  • UM 3-2 in games
  • MSU +24 points

(1-25-14) UM by 5
(2-23-14) UM by 9
(3-16-14) MSU by 14
(2-01-15) MSU by 10
(2-17-15) MSU by 13
  • MSU 3-2 in games
  • MSU +23 points

Michigan has scored a pair of three-game win streaks in the past four seasons, each of which included a one-point UM victory. If those one-point wins had been switched, the Wolverines would have lost seven of the last ten, rather than winning five of the last ten. That's a very small margin for arrogant boasting!

Here are a few other things we can conclude from reviewing the list of actual games played:

  • Over the last 10 games, the series is tied, 5-5 (but the Spartans have outscored the Wolverines by 47 points).
  • Over the last 15 games, MSU leads UM 9-6 (outscoring them by 87 points).
  • Over the last 20 games, MSU leads UM 12-8 (outscoring them by 120 points).
  • Over the last 25 games, MSU leads UM 16-9 (outscoring them by 176 points). The Spartans have had at least one double-digit victory during all but two calendar years since that time (2003, 2011).
  • The Wolverines have won by double-digits over the Spartans only one time since Monica Lewinsky became a household name, and that one game was eight years ago.
  • Four of the last six UM wins have been by five points or less.
  • 12 of the last 13 MSU wins have been by double-digits.

BASKETBALL RIVALRY RETURNS TO NORMALCY

July is "Beilein Month"
Originally published on 2-18-15

The sun rose today on a very normal world, as the men's basketball rivalry between Michigan State and Michigan has fallen back into order. The Spartans get another double-digit win over the Wolverines, which remains the most common outcome in games between the two teams since the turn of the century.

Our post-game coverage begins with a review of how things led up to Tuesday's game, from last fall to this week.

MICHIGAN FANS NOW CLAIMING "CLOSE WINS" DON'T COUNT IN BASKETBALL RIVALRY SERIES

July is "Beilein Month"
Originally published on 2-6-15

The last time Michigan beat Michigan State in football was by two points on a last-minute field-goal after a dramatic fourth-down pass completion. It was about as close a game as you can get without overtime. You would have thought, at the time, that UM folks would have been somewhat moderate in their jubilation, seeing as how it was a super-close outcome.

But all we heard after that 2012 game were the chants of "Go Blue" and the charges of "Little Brother" and so forth. There was not discernible sense of realism on the part of Yellow Nation, no signature of respect for a great effort by their opponent in a rivalry game. They definitely wanted to treat that win like any other blowout victory in the distant past.

Fast forward to last weekend, when the MSU Basketball team beat UM, but needed overtime to do so. Not only do the Bluebloods want utter respect for their team effort (fair), they want to say the win didn't even really count (unfair), and that Wolverine Basketball dominance is alive and well throughout the State of Michigan. Despite those two losses in a row. (Ridiculous.)

In case the Michigan fans in your neighborhood want to suggest that close victories don't really count, you may want to direct their attention to the historical record of the basketball seriesIf narrow victory margins didn't count, UM would hardly have a "win" registered in the last 25 games between the teams.

We have grouped all of the last 25 games between Michigan State and Michigan into the list of wins by each team during that time frame. A quick review of the data shows that UM has beaten MSU by more than five points only three times this century.

LAST NINE (9) UM VICTORIES

(3-16-14) MSU by 14
(2-01-15) MSU by 10

  • Eleven of the last twelve MSU wins over UM were by ten (10) points or more
  • Only two (2) single-digit victory margins in last 25 games
  • Total victory margins of 229 points in 16 wins
  • Average victory margin of 14 points per win since 2001

There's an old saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." Maybe we need a new version: "You can lead a Michigan Fan to the facts, but you can't make them think."
