FEELING FINE ABOUT VALENTINE

A quick update on our favorite Valentine as he moves through his Senior season. These are unverified current season statistics:
DENZEL VALENTINE - 14 points, 12 rebounds, 9 assists, 5 steals, per game.
Denzel's team won the state championship last year as he played point guard. His father Carlton is Coach of the team after playing at MSU under Jud Heathcote.

Valentine was ranked in every Top 100 until recently as his stock is falling. He couldn't possibly mean as much to any other team as he will to MSU. I believe that next year at this time, we will be feeling fine about Valentine!

  1. REPORT: chUMps coach, John Beilein was asked by a reporter if he would root for the Spartans tonight vs. Ohio State. When he declined to throw his support behind MSU, other reporters chalked it up as dUMb question.

Reports indicate MSU will pick up verbal from another 2013 running back

A week after Michigan State picked up its first verbal commitment in running back Gerald Holmes, reports indicate the Spartans second verbal will come from a running back as well.

Rivals.com’s Matt Dorsey reported R.J. Shelton, of Beaver Dam High School in Wisconsin, intends to commit to Michigan State when he visits Feb. 25.

Shelton received the scholarship offer on Feb. 10 — it was his first offer. Click here to see highlights from his junior season.

Now, this is not set in stone as a “verbal” — which is even less set in stone. However, looking at this kid’s game you sure hope MSU does indeed pull him in.

This much is for sure: Michigan State knows it needs to increase the depth in the backfield.

MSU currently has Larry Caper entering his senior year and Le’Veon Bell going into his junior year.

Behind them, Nick Hill will be a sophomore, as will Jeremy Langford — who Mark Dantonio said will return to running back from defensive back on signing day.

Nick Tompkins enters in the 2012 recruiting class, but the position will be a focus in the 2013 class as has already been seen.

Nevertheless, the strong pursuit of running backs remains and it looks like two will be the number for this class. Holmes is number one, and hopefully Shelton becomes number two.

The Spartans also have offered Travis Custis, from Hampton (Lovejoy), Ga., and Laquvionte Gonzalez, Cedar Hill, Texas.
