Time sure flies when you're having fun. That was Michigan Basketball in the 1990s, as the Wolverines hooked-up with organized crime to fund their illegal player payments, racking up more than one-hundred wins that would later be vacated by NCAA (and FBI) actions. But the penalties were far from swift, as UM enjoyed their dual status as Winners & Cheaters for more than a decade before the crap hit the fan.
It was on this date in 2003 that the NCAA accepted the self-imposed sanctions by Michigan, and then added more penalties to the miscreant institution-gone-wild.
On May 8, 2003 the NCAA accepted Michigan's sanctions.
It also imposed an additional two years of probation and
docked the school one scholarship a year from 2004–2005
until 2007–2008. It also ordered the school to disassociate
itself from Robert Traylor, Maurice Taylor and
Louis Bullock until 2012, and Chris Webber until 2013.
Very few Michigan fans accept their team was responsible for anything bad, even to the present day. Their attitude towards historical fact looks like a child burying their tear-streamed face into a pillow screaming "nana nana boo-boo". But more than 100 games were "vacated" due to the scandal, including several tournament championships. The banners were taken down, the trophies were returned. No school would take such a self-punitive action if it were not, indeed, "guilty as sin".
The last penalty expired only about two years ago. That was six years into the UM coaching career of John Beilein. It still hasn't been "that long" since the last effects of the Michigan Basketball corruption scandal began to diminish. Those who ignore history, as they say, may be doomed to repeat it.
