UM WOMEN KEEP PADDING SEASON WIN TOTAL

March Madness is over for major college basketball teams from Michigan. The Spartans were knocked out in the Friday Upset Special, and the Wolverines fizzled out at the end against their "rival" (?) Notre Dame later that same day. Even the Spartan Women got home-cooked in Mississippi on Sunday afternoon, playing on the road instead of at Breslin due to a scheduling snafu.

But wait, there's still one team chugging along! It's the Michigan Women's Basketball team, marching through the cannon-fodder of the Women's National Invitational Tournament. The Wolverines have added three wins to their season total, and they are feeling good about it. If they can just beat the San Diego Toreros tomorrow night on their home court, they will have once again reached the promised land of 20+ wins.

The UM women "ended" their season this year with a 17-13 record, compiled against the likes of, well, the B1G Conference schedule and the patsies they knocked around in December. Against Michigan State? The Spartans held a 27-point lead over the Wolverines after three quarters, so you get the idea.

Rolling up easy victories after missing the Big Dance is nothing new for UM Coach Kim Barnes-Arico. She did the same thing last year, finishing the regular season and the conference tournament with a record of 16-14, only to tack-on four more wins in the WNIT. That's why they had a "20-win season".

They started this pattern two years ago, finishing 2014 at 18-13, only to get a couple more freebies in the WNIT to reach the 20-win mark.

So Barnes-Arico basically took her predecessors players and made the NCAA field in her first season, followed by three years of finishing with 16-18 wins and padding their season record in the WNIT. Just putting things in perspective:

If the Michigan Women win the WNIT, the sports media
will run around them with stars in their eyes.

But they have finished in 7th-8th-9th-place in the
conference during each of the past three seasons.

TODAY IN chUMp HISTORY: MARCH 18, 1994

March Madness is in full swing which generally turns our attention to basketball, but a quick note today about hockey. This is a big date in Michigan Hockey history, as it was on this date in 1994 that UM Coach Red Berenson pleaded guilty to drunk driving, after originally being arrested for indecent exposure and pissing on the library wall.

What's that? A Wolverine Coach behaving below legal standards? How could this be? His name isn't Gary Moeller, is it?

In case you didn't know about this, we bring you the news, two decades after the fact. And don't blame yourself for not finding evidence on your own, as the UM faithful have scrubbed the Internet nearly clean of any record of his arrest. We can find glancing references in comments and blogs, but the main reports are much more difficult to locate. Berenson must have a strong cyber-team working on his behalf.

So we turn to the Michigan Daily for a review of the situation:

"On the night of March 16, 1994, as Berenson left Banfield's Bar and Grill in Ann Arbor, a police officer was watching from across the street. The officer watched as Berenson first urinated outside next to a wall of the public library, then got in his car and put it in reverse. Berenson had gone about 20 feet before the officer stopped him and arrested him for drunken driving and urinating in public.
"And suddenly, like never before, Red Berenson was a front-page story. And so was the Michigan hockey program.
"The charges were eventually reduced to "driving while visibly impaired."

Sure, some might say, "nobody's perfect", and that's exactly our point. The University of Michigan isn't perfect, either, no matter how many incidents they may sweep under the carpet or scrub from the Internet. Right, Brendan Gibbons?

So we bring you these FACTS to help you understand the true nature of the U-of-M. They are just about like anybody else that you would find anywhere else. They do some things well, but they also screw up and even get caught now and again. THEY ARE NOT "SPECIAL" BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT DIFFERENTThey are just another school, and they should be viewed and treated accordingly.

WOLVERINE BASKETBALL SWEEPS TWIN BILL AGAINST TULSA AND WRIGHT STATE

Michigan Basketball is BACK. Coach John Beilein led his team to a rousing five-point beat-down of Tulsa last night, qualifying to play in the NCAA Tournament.

The Wolverines took a commanding eight-point lead into half-time, its largest of the game, and see-sawed with the Golden Hurricanes throughout the second half. Once Tulsa took a lead with 1:09 remaining, UM turned on the jets and outscored the third-place team from the American Conference by six points. It was the worst loss for Tulsa since the last game they played, when Memphis beat them by 22 points.

The win serves as a ticket to the Big Dance, where Michigan will face Notre Dame on Friday night in New York City. This marquee match-up was the driving force behind the selection of UM for one of the prestigious so-called "play-in" games. The Wolverine advance assures a huge crowd at Madison Square Garden and terrific ratings on the television coverage. It's viewed as a much better match-up for the Irish than other teams that had better season-long credentials than Michigan.

Meanwhile, the Wolverine women took it out on Wright State in the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) last night, advancing to the WNIT second round. It was the 18th win of the season for UM. The Michigan women's team gets a chance at a "20-win season" by avoiding the NCAA Tourmament, similar to what they did last year.

UM padded their regular season record last year with four wins in the WNIT, pushing them past the 20-win mark.

MICHIGAN vs TULSA: PRE-GAME REPORT

Big matchup for Michigan tonight as the Wolverines take on the Golden Hurricanes of Tulsa. There will be plenty of glamour on the court, as John Beilein won a National Invitational Tournament (NIT) championship with West Virginia in 2007, and Tulsa won the NIT in 1981 and 2001. But that's not all. The Golden Hurricanes also won the inaugural College Basketball Invitational (CBI) tournament in 2008.

So this is truly a clash of the champions.
Beilein with his NIT trophy, Tulsa with its CBI trophy.

Before the arrival of Beilein to Ann Arbor, the Wolverines also won the NIT in 2004. (Michigan cheated to win the 1997 NIT, but that "championship" was vacated by the Ed Martin scandal.)

With all of the NIT experience on both sides, the teams should be very comfortable playing on a Wednesday night in March in a game that barely anybody cares about.

TODAY IN chUMp HISTORY: MARCH 16, 1994

Plenty of flack getting fired at Spartan Nation over the recent arrest of a former basketball player. Definitely not good news, not what we want to see. But he is a FORMER basketball player, and it's hard to maintain accountability standards for those who have moved on from the university.

What if a CURRENT EMPLOYEE was arrested for inappropriate behavior? Like Jim Minick, for example. He was busted for aggravated drunk driving last spring, and his reward was a free month of paid vacation. His case was swept under the rug so quickly, you probably don't even remember it happened. But it did.

It's nothing new for a CURRENT EMPLOYEE of the University of Michigan to get arrested. And we don't mean Jim Harbaugh, who is a current employee, and who was arrested, because those things were not concurrent.

We're talking today about Red Berensen, the "legendary" coach of the Michigan Hockey team. It was 22 years ago today that Red was popped for public pissing on the wall of a local library. Of course, he was drunk and disorderly and he was driving drunk as well, so old Red was in a heap of trouble for a few days. He eventually pled guilty to a lesser charge.

Berensen received no extra punishment from the university, as his crimes and misdemeanors were also swept under the rug. He has been propped-up and heralded ever since, only because he knows how to recruit players and win games. Berensen is so good that the old league (CCHA) named the championship trophy after Ron Mason, the Michigan State coach. (tongue in cheek)

So while chUMps everywhere fan the flames against a FORMER player from MSU, remember that UM still employs at least three coaches with arrest records, two of which were incurred while CURRENT EMPLOYEES of the school.

PLAY-IN GAME HAS FAMILIAR "N.I.T. FEEL" FOR MICHIGAN BASKETBALL COACH JOHN BEILEIN

John Beilein is feeling better about his team's post-season destiny. While he had his heart set on the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), he plans to "soldier up" and do his best with a paltry bid to the NCAAs. What made the difference?

Beilein says the Play-In Game assignment has an "NIT feel" to it, being on a Wednesday night against Tulsa, a team that has basically made its name as an NIT participant. He expects a small crowd to be at the game, similar to most other teams that play in his favorite tournament. And he knows that practically nobody will be watching on television, the same as all of the other NIT teams.

So he's got his mojo back in order as he tries to replicate that one shining moment in 2007 when he brought home the bacon in New York City as the undisputed champion of the NIT. He's pointing out to his players there is still a pathway to The Big Apple, since Notre Dame awaits the winner on Friday night.

As for those other teams that seemed to have equal or better credentials that did not get a ticket to The Big Dance? Beilein says they're lucky to be in the NIT, a tournament they could actually win.
