Samuelsen: MSU's "Obsession" with chUMps Must Stop

Jamie Samuelsen's blog: Spartans should rise above petty obsession with U-M

Here is my reader comment post to the free press blog article:

DUMP the chUMps and Spartan Resource
It's more than the fans. The media is constantly asking MSU coaches and players about Michigan. Coach Dantonio stands there at the Big Ten media days ready to answer media questions about the Spartans and he gets a wave of questions about Michigan's success last year, about what he thinks of Michigan's recruiting success, about the BCS selecting Michigan, etc. The pre-season rankings come out and the question to MSU players and coaches are all about Michigan. Similar questions are not asked of Michigan staff and players. No wonder he gets pissed. It makes it look HE IS THE ONE wanting to talk about Michigan. He can't answer the question to everyone's satisfaction so being asked is a no win deal. A perfect example of type of questions Dantonio fields is this: Last year, the media asked the fans and even coach Dantonio if he would "root for Michigan" in a game that MSU did not require a Michigan win to finish atop the division. Lets see this headline instead: "Will Brady Hoke Root for MSU this Saturday?" http://spartanresource.blogspot.com/2011/11/will-brady-hoke-root-for-msu_16.html - The truth is, generally speaking, what's bad for Michigan is good for MSU. That's just the truth. When "they" lose, it is good for"us". That will never change. It shouldn't change. That is part of the fun. Besides, Michigan is not who they say they are. The image they project and people buy into is a false one, so every loss, every cop story, the current NCAA sanction (which have been conveniently swept under the rug as if they never happened), every mis-step that proves that there no such thing as "The Michigan Difference" is good, because the truth is good and people need to know the truth. I don't disrespect what they have accomplished - which is a lot (more than the Spartans), it's just that the image of what they have accomplished is far greater than the reality and that is a huge source for all the "hate". http://spartanresource.blogspot.com/p/dump-chumps.html

How big of a deal is the Michigan State-Michigan Twitter situation that popped up last weekend? How should Mark Dantonio handle it?

The Michigan-Michigan State rivalry is nastier than it’s ever been. There’s no debate about that. If you haven’t been paying attention for the last four years, let me bring you up to speed.

1) Michigan can’t stand the fact that Michigan State has passed them in football.

2) Michigan State fans can’t stand the fact that Michigan won’t admit the fact that Michigan State has passed them in football.

And that pretty much sums it up. Oh sure, there have been some other flare-ups along the way. It didn’t help that Michigan lost to MSU last season, didn’t win its division, and yet earned a berth to a BCS bowl. And it didn’t help that Michigan won the last two recruiting battles, causing the Old Blues to proclaim that MSU’s brief run of dominance was soon coming to an end, even though nothing has happened on the field to underscore that point.

Michigan State is on top. Michigan is looking up at the Spartans. That’s a fact.

Now, Michigan State needs to start acting like it. Obsessing about Michigan doesn’t help the cause. Trying to take away from some of the things Michigan has done doesn’t help the cause. And gloating about an ugly Michigan loss on Twitter definitely doesn’t help the cause. In fact, it makes Michigan State look cheap. It makes them look less than they are. If you’re on top and you’re looking down, why should you care what one of the teams under you is doing?

But they do. At least some of them do.

Denicos Allen tweeted about Denard Robinson — “Is this guy really a QB I’ll say my mans (walk-on Tommy Vento) is a better QB lol.”

Safety Kyle Artinian jumped on the Denard train as well — “DENARD IS SOOOO BAD! And it makes me feel so good.”

Same for Jamal Lyles — “I can play quarterback for the school in blue. (Le’Veon Bell) for heisman > the other guy in the great state of michigan."

That doesn’t speak for the whole team or the whole school. It certainly doesn’t speak for head coach Mark Dantonio, who angrily addressed the issue Tuesday at his weekly press conference. Some of the tweets were taken down. And I’m sure that some Michigan players have gone to Twitter over the years. In fact let’s not forget that it was Mike Hart’s infamous “little brother” comment that ignited this rivalry to the level it’s at today. If Hart can talk down to a rival, Michigan State is entitled to do the same.

But they shouldn’t. It’s unnecessary.

But more than that, it simply fuels the idea that Michigan State is so obsessed with Michigan that they can’t see straight. The Spartans scored a nice win over nationally ranked Boise State on Friday night. Why should it matter what Michigan is doing on Saturday night? The two programs are rivals, and they always will be. But in the course of any rivalry, one school will rise up and another will fall. Michigan State has risen up. And this season should be a continuation of that trend. The Spartans have done the hard part in getting to this level.

Now comes the easy part — acting like it.

The 40 year thing is true, however, I grew up in the 60's...Duffy...Bubba...Bump...and when I was a kid the UM game was like playing Indiana now...an instant win...so I was jaded. Duffy lost his mojo...Bo came along and boom...40 years...I get it. The recruiting thing? Could care less...that's fan jumbo jive...I've heard it till my head hurts how "Michigan won the recruiting war"... OK...prove it...enough with winning where it matters not-in the papers or internet sites. The Bama game was a classic example of delusional M fans who want so desperately to be in the conversation because...well...you know..they DESERVE to be in the conversation... Humility is a wonderful thing...:)

I understand that winning the recruiting battle might not end
up with UM having better players in a few years, i just think
that as long as you're going to use the word delusional you
could see how that it would also apply to MSU fans who are
trying to pretend that even with having the most successful
coach they have had since Duffy (or at least one that you
were able to hold on to, Saban having bolted for greener pastures)
and even after he put together 11 win seasons back to back for
the first time EVER in the MSU history that you're not concerned
that he was badly out-recruited by Hoke. I think another example
of delusional is thinking that beating UM 4 years in a row means
that you have 40 years of mediocrity well behind you. Did anyone
on your end learn humility when UM beat MSU 6 years in a row
prior to their 4 year strea...See more

A great Michigan Fan and friend of mine once told me years ago, "You (MSU FAN) guys need to start loving yourselves more than you hate Michigan..." I laughed when he told me that but I think he's correct. MSU Fans, which I am one, need to stop worrying about UM. What is so much fun now is that the future looks like both schools will be tough, competitive and the rivalry actually will be special vs. the butt-kicking we received through the Bo/Mo and Lloyd years. Both schools have much to be proud of and great coaches! The way I look at it now is that both schools will win their share between each other. Obviously, going down to A2 and beating them a 5th time would be sweet...but I promise you M is going to get better and better. One more thing, if you put a gun to Brady's head he'd have to tell you that he is ready for life without Denard as his QB. Great kid. Great athlete but he's not the QB that Brady wants for his program... He inherited Denard from MSU's best buddy, Rich Rod :) I've watched now for 4 years and the kid has issues when it comes to the forward pass...no question!

I am a UM fan and I would have no problem with MSU staying
at the level they are now, it would be great to have an in-state
rivalry where both teams are usually nationally rated, similar to
Auburn-Alabama. UM pretty much owned MSU for 40 years, it
was going to turn around sooner or later. Hoke has won the
recruiting wars his first 2 years as UM's coach, and i think we'll
see the results in a few years. I also think Dantonio will continue
to be successful, so either school having a long winning streak
against the other probably won't happen.

I'll have to respectfully disagree. I'm a Michigan State alum and many of my friends are Spartans as well and quite honestly I don't see the supposed UM obsession everybody here mentions. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy squashing UM in football every year, but beyond that I mostly don't care. I don't think it's fair to broadly paint an inaccurate description of an entire fan base. It seems to me the media more perpetuates this stereotype than it actually exists.

Don't lie to yourself Ted, you know darn well that Michigan is the most important game on your schedule every cotton picken year period end of story. You are totally obsessed with Michigan. Another thing, every time Michigan loses a game the msu fan base rejoices. Now, that is obsession.

Aww come on Ted...you know as much as any of us...this interplay is fun...entertaining...and passionate. I'm not broadly painting...if you read between the lines this is all about a gentle poke at the entire situation...the media...the fans on both sides and even those such as you and apparently many others who "don't care too much" about the whole "UM thing..." Good on ya buddy...the idea that you can stand apart from the fray and not let it bother you is either a credit to your calm demeanor or possible a really good yoga class...meditation...or pharmacy...(I'm joking here!)

John, its nice to see a State fan with some sense of reality, dont get me wrong some Michigan fans can use a little as well. Myself being a Wolverine fan I know Rich-Rod set the program back as Dantonio made State a better team and your spot on as far as Denard goes with him being a great athlete but not the kind of quarterback that Hoke wants for his program, I am looking forward to Shane Morris taking over in the near future and Michigan will get better over the next few season once Hoke starts getting his recruits rolling along, a coach cant change a team with one or two recruiting classes, Hoke also did a great job with the players he inherited. It should be intresting on October 20 with the winner probably in the drivers seat to go to the Big Ten Championship game then again Nebraska will also have a say so I am sure...

Hey, UM is "THE BRAND"...can't deny it. MSU is always climbing the mountain. Brady is a good coach and seems like even a better person. If I were an M fan I'd only wish that Bill Martin had made the phone call to Hoke over RR...the program would be right where it wants to be. As for my beloved Spartans? They'll be fine under what can only be deemed a "REAL PROGRAM" for the first time in....well...maybe since Duffy? Perles has some success but those were "dirty days" in my view...steroids and holding the University hostage for Pro jobs and power soured me on George...who I like, but he was selfish then. Dantonio will keep it competitive and that's a good thing for everyone! Just like the UM hoop team...it's more fun when they are worth a damn...more fun to beat'm too...:)

I'm a die hard Wolverine fan, but this story does nothing but throw gas on the fire. LOL! I could care less what Sparty fans think of us. I'm looking forward to the next several years with hopefully a series where each game comes down to the wire. Not Michigan killing MSU each year, and likewise, MSU beating Michigan down each year. I think this is gonna be a fun rivalry to be a part of going forward. But again, I'm not going to worry about the scUM comments. I get a kick out of them. GO BLUE!

Please, more self-righteous, santimonius palaver. Perhaps it's Samuelsen who needs to rise above pettiness, a word which pretty much explains this entire column. A couple of college kids learned a little lesson. This sounds more like an ax to grind against the Green and White than anything else. Does he really think Spartans stay up nights because of what Michigan may think of us? That's the great thing about four straight wins working on five. They pretty much speak for themselves.

Damn, I want to party with Bob...! Way to take this stuff seriously Bob... My advice? Breath slowly... So what if Michigan is the "measuring stick"? Really? So Mark put mighty UM as the measuring stick for MSU... That's not anything more than telling it like it is. The illustrious past of UM is without question something to measure up to. Anyone with an eye on history can agree with that. It is interesting however, that since Mark DID make it a measuring stick ya'll haven't had too much success. Instead of living in the past you may want to take a more pragmatic view and appreciate the fact that MSU is a much better/tougher/more formidable foe than it has been... So again...take a big deep breath...relax...it'll all be fine...!

Seriously my boy, you need to calm down on the whole "little brother", "we'll always be better..." Blah, blah, blah... It's really pretty simple kids. The times are a changing. MSU is viable. Michigan is going to get back because they have an amazing edge/culture that only a handful of schools around the country have... USC, OK, TX, BAMA, FLORIDA, FL ST., Ohio State... These schools along with M have a resounding edge and not to admit that is...well...just numbingly absurd. So you banter about winning recruiting wars and how "the record speaks for itself..." And on, and on and on... The reality Mr. Bob is that MSU is competing like no other time in their history on the football field. And Michelle...? Wow Michelle, your intelligence is simply mind boggling. I am a Michigan fan win or lose and have been a proud Michigan fan of the winningist college football program in the Nation since the late 70's. I grew up an avid Michigan fan and never experienced a losing season until the Rich Rod years of 2008 through 2010 when Michigan went 3-9 worst season ever with the most losses, 5-7 second losing season since 1967 and 7-6 in 2010. Suffice it to say as a Michigan fan, I am not used to losing seasons or missing a bowl game.

Thankfully, that era is over and a true Michigan man is in charge and that man is Brady Hoke. I don't begrudge anyone of being a fan of any school even moo u. I even like the rivalries and I am glad not everyone is a Michigan fan. I never once said msu sucks as you stated, I simply said msu will always be Michigan's little brother in football and always have a losing record in the series. Hold your head up high Michelle after Michigan beats msu on Oct 20th. There is absolutely no shame in losing to the winningist college football program of ALL TIME! Just get used to Michigan beating msu in football about 72% of the time. Good day.

I'm asking, of course, because you keep saying 'guarantee' as though you have something to do with it, or you're going to back this with something tangible. As you don't, and you won't, the phrase you are looking for is " in my highly biased opinion".

    Dear Bob,

I can't be certain, but I think I may have seen you post similar (perhaps almost identical) predictions before each of the previous four MSU-UM football games.

If it was not you, I apologize. There are just so many UM posters who have claimed "this is the year that Sparty is going down" ... they all start to run together.

Maybe I should file them along with all the posts that said Denard would win the Heisman - in 2012, and 2011, and 2010. Or even that Tate Forcier (remember him?) would win the Heisman in 2009.

I think that file would also have all the posts about how Rich Rod would transform Michigan into a fast, nimble, national championship-caliber team. RichRod would be way better than that stodgy old Lloyd Carr, who only gave UM its only national championship won without wearing leather helmets (it's true!).

I can add that to the articles that said Brady Hoke would run a high-discipline, no-nonsense "Michigan Man" team. Of course, since January 2012, 8 of his players have been arrested for different incidents. Since that is almost 10% of the team, and since all of them except one (Darryl Stonum) are still with the team, that says a lot about how they define "Michigan Men" to me.

Either way, thanks for posting. It is fun to read the comments in these forums.

    Cheers.

Oh Dave, stop with the childish players arrested crap. And No I didn't guarantee a win prior to this year. I don't recall anyone saying Tate Forcier would win a Heisman trophy either. Sparty is going down Dave and I will enjoy every minute this year. Enjoy 2nd or 3rd place in the legends division Dave because you won't sniff first place.

So......was that 'yes' or'no' on the fries?

My realities are as follows: We've seen Denard, and have solved him. We bring an even better defense to this game than the ones that held him to an average of 15 points in 2 games. With 8 of 10 back on the Oline, we'll be able to run the ball enough to score moe than that. It'll be far enough nto the season that our passing game will produce solid if unspectacular results.

Your "realities" boil down to a Michigan ?Man coaching, and the series results from the 70's. I'm paraphrasing there, because other than your 'guarantee'--which is idiotic, for the reasons stated above--you really haven't provided any reasons that aren't soaked in Blue KoolAid.

The last time UM beat MSU the UM team disrespected MSU on the field following the game. Mike Hart also made his famous disrespectful statement. The UM coaches did and said NOTHING. They enabled it. Jamie Samuelson wrote NOTHING about it. Now he is up in arms. Cry Jamie. Cry, cry, cry, and when you're done, take your whipping like a man, if you are able.

Disrespected Leroy? What did Mike Hart say that was disrespectful??? Mike Hart was interviewed and he simply said playing msu is like playing your little brother and YES msu will ALWAYS BE Michigan's little brother in football. Sure, little brother may win a few but BIG BROTHER aka Michigan will dominate the overall series hence the 67-32-5 record. Get ready to be dominated again Leroy because it starts on Oct 20th and YES I guarantee it.

Didn't Dantonio ask for a moment of silence after the App St loss? So when his team lost to Michigan that year, why should they show MSU respect? MSU football hasn't done anything to earn respect on the field since the 1960's.

    Dear Joe Berlucchi,

MSU has the best winning percentage in the Big Ten Conference in the five years since Mark Dantonio became Head Coach. Ohio State and Penn State are the next-best programs ... BEFORE you remove their forfeited games. After the forfeits, it is not even close. The next-best teams are Wisconsin and Iowa. Michigan doesn't make the list.

I realize you'll want to look back farther than the past five seasons, and I am OK with that --- except your post stated "MSU football hasn't done anything to earn respect on the field since the 1960's". Clearly, that statement is simply factually incorrect.

Perhaps you are wishing the last five seasons did not happen at all - but they did, and they are still happening today.

Good luck against Air Force Saturday. Looking forward to October 20.

Dave that is all fine and good, but they still have only gone to one Rose Bowl in the last 50 years (1987). MSU football is a solid solid program, and there is no taking away what Dantonio has done. But the fact remains that it took the perfect storm at UM (which thank God is over) for MSU to rise. It will be very hard for them to stay at the level they have played the last few years once Brady Hoke gets rolling. Good luck to you as well. Can't wait for October 20th. Hope you guys are undefeated and ranked in the Top 5 when we play.

Some good points, Jamie. Obsession, however, cuts both ways. Despite recent improvements in coverage of the Spartans, we've all been witness to a near-obsession with the Wolverines from this publication and many other national media outlets that do have a tendancy to overplay Michigan and drive we Spartans a bit crazy at times. Recent expamples include the premature proclamation of parity of the two school's basketball programs when UM finally won a game after the Brian Ellerbe years, to having four straight years of aggressive September Heisman buzz around both Tate Forcier and Dennard (seems silly now, doesn't it?), last year's aggressive ESPN campaign for a BCS bowl when UM barely squeezed into eligibility, this year's tremendously overrated intial polling, etc. Meanwhile, not a word is mentioned about the classy coach who took a knee at the three yard line to run out the clock on the NCAA's giant killer, Boise State, rather than ring up another score like Urban Meyer would in a hearbeat because it would help his BCS rating. Instead, we're still talking some pretty lame Tweets instead. In short, we Spartans will likely take the chip off of our shoulder the day the Wolverines get over themselves.

Seriously, the title of all articles involving the Spartan football program should read,"Nothing to Report". Despite the fact you beat Big Brother four years in a row, Sparty still has accomplished zilch, zero, nada, nothing. That's the problem. Two 11 win seasons with nothing to show. Oh yeah, a "w" against an SEC team that had the best conference schedule in which they played a bunch of cellar dweller's. And I'm sure you will also say...."Hey, they lost to Boise and we beat them". Different year and a totally different team. We seen what you did with a 9 win Alabama team in 2010.

This article is correct, for the most part. Everyone always goes back to Mike Hart's "little brother" comment. That whole thing was started by Mark Dantoino. Yes, the Michigan State football coach who is now saying some of his players need to shut up. After Michigan's loss to Appalachian State a reporter asked for his opinion about the upset. He responded by saying that we should have a moment of silence for the Michigan football program. As if it was dead. That is why after Michigan won in East Lansing 28-24, Michigan gathered at mid-field and got on one knee for "a moment of silence". Mike Hart's little brother comment came afterward when he was asked about the comeback and crushing MSU's hopes for victory. Mike Hart was a kid acting like a kid. Dantoino was upset and then spoke up again with his pride before the fall comment. They have won the last 4 years, but his players are just doing what was done in the past.

Dave Durocher So apparently Mark Dantonio doesn't take kindly to Mike Hart referring to his program as the little brother in the state. I don't know much, but I do know that it is HI-LARIOUS to watch a rival coach have Mike Hart get so far into his head that he feels the need to comment on it at his press conference two days after the fact.

Let's just run through a little time line of sorts to provide a background to this and some other nonsense.

September 17th, 2005 - Michigan State beats Notre Dame and proceeds to plant a flag at midfield in South Bend (HT for the reminder of this to MGOBLOG).

September 1st, 2007 - Mark Dantonio offers to have a moment of silence for Michigan after being informed that they just lost to Appalachian State. Here's a thread at the RCMB pretty much dedicated to how awesome that quote was and ho...See more

I just don't see why its ok for UM to have an "obsession" over Ohio State and not ok for MSU to do the same for their rival.. Yes Michigan is our biggest rival. Yes Ohio State is UM's biggest rival. I just feel like the media wants MSU to call the dogs off now that we are getting Sept. Heisman talk, have one of the 3 nastiest defenses in the country, and a coach who doesn't put up with anything coming out of AA. I personally thought the tweets lacked class but our players have been tweeting negative things about them since the BCS selection show last year.. Now the microscope!

This is a total "non-story". You have 85 very young adults on scholarship and then some who are not. They have keyboards and some time on their hands. Three of them tweeted about Dennard Robinson which spawned 6 articles on Freep and Detroit News. Give me a break! It' the adults out there that need to get a grip!!!.

Also, side note, I am a Spartan fan, and although Robinson wasn't that effective in the Bama' game, I love how that kid plays. He puts everything out there for his school, you've got to love that.

Jamie, a big part of it is the media, and you're totally missing the point on those tweets. How many articles did we get about Denard Robinson versus Leveon Bell? MSU fans are sick of hearing from UM fans and the media about Denard like he's won anything other than the worst BCS game in history and the annual September Heisman. But he's the Michigan QB, so we understand, but it's fine to remind everyone how good he isn't.

    Dear Dave Drocher,

Perhaps some MSU fans bring up those "old facts" because their UM counterparts so frequently bring up self-serving numbers from that era. Either all the facts and all the results from that era are relevant, or none of them are relevant.

In fact, UM has a special honor - they are the ONLY team ever completely kicked out of the Big Ten Conference for cheating. Michigan was using paid professional football players to win their games, claiming mythical "national champiosnhips" with hired thugs in 1901, 1902, 1903 and 1904. The Western Conference (the Big Ten's predecessor) had enough ... in 1906, they delivered an ultimatum to Fielding Yost, UM's combative and rascist head coach. Stop the use of pros - or you are out of the Conference.

UM and Yost refused, and Michigan was kicked out of the Big Ten starting in 1907. They were not readmitted until 1917, after UM finally agreed to abide by Conference rules.

During this cheating era, UM claimed 9 wins over Michigan Agricultural College, the predecessor of MSU. There wins should all be vacated based upon UM's cheating of the era.

In fact, of the first 50 games in the MSU-UM series, 43 were played in Ann Arbor. UM refused to play a home-and-home series with MSU until the Spartans were admitted to Big Ten membership.

This rivalry was fundamentally unfair for more than half of its history. Ignoring that fact is simply absurd.

Immaturity seems to have no expiration date. No age of choice. The handful of young people from both schools that have been "counseled" on this subject by Respective head coaches, do not define the Universities envolved, but simply the incorrect Mindset of a few individuals. Where an athlete should be focused, and respectful of an opponents plight, we sometimes see "trash talk". Leave these matters to those in charge of them. Media, fans, alumni.....stay out if it.
