Fans comment of Devoln Roe retirement - Knee pain just too much...

From The Hey Joe! Blog on Greenandwhite.com
There were a lot of articles from which to select. You can get more details in the rescource center at the bottom of  the page. I selected this piece because of the comments fans are leaving on the blog. I included some here and more after the jump-break.

Joe's Post:
Delvon Roe and Tom Izzo are announcing at an emotional news conference right now that Roe is giving up his final season of eligibility because of injuries. He had another setback a week ago, with some bone chips taken out of his right knee. Much more later.

"I played through pain, I hid things from coach just so I could help this team," Roe said. "It just got to the point where it got too hard. I don't think I could have gone through another year mentally with this type of pain."

Roe will remain on scholarship this year and is on track to graduate in May. And he will travel with MSU to the aircraft carrier game. That's a game Roe was
no doubt looking forward to, against UNC and Roy Williams.

"I hope you remember him by what he gave us, because he probably gave more than 99 percent of guys did here in any sport," Izzo said. "He gave his health."

A Spartan to the end. Delvon, I will never forget the story of the pain you endured during the 2010 tournament, not to mention your entire career. The 3 C's - Commitment, Character, Class. You have all of them and we all wish you the best. Please become the next Bubba Smith of the Big Screen.

Wow, my favorite current Spartan and the definition of same. I'll miss this one. Tough decision. Be at peace Mr. Roe.

Roe, Roe, Roe!!! We will miss you Delvon, and we wish you the very best...tough blow to the Spartan lineup for sure.

Tough defines Delvon. This has got to be tough for him and it's certainly tough for the Spartans. His physical presence and determination will be missed.

It sucks that you have a young man like Delvon who lives and breathes basketball and will never be able to play the game he loves again. Then you have the Memphis and Kentucky players who search out coaches like Calipari just to see how much money they can make for one year before bailing out in search of more money.

Delvon, thanks for all your hard work and great energy on the hardwood. Good luck with your acting, take good care of that beautiful daughter of yours, and her mom too.

Best to you and your family, Delvon. I can't imagine the disappointment and frustration (but relief?) you're feeling. You gave your all, and then some. Thank you!

Awful news, but he's got a bright future. Starting a family, graduating in May and a promising career in acting.

Dear Delvon,

Well, I have been the biggest fan a 54 year old guy can be to a kid younger than my youngest. I had your wallpaper on my PC at the office throughout bball season 2 years running because you were in the truest sense of the words, A Spartan WARRIOR.

All I can say is that you set the bar for these young athletes in every sport attending MSU, to see what heart and soul, dedication and team player means.

My very best wishes to you, Mr. Roe as you graduate, move on with your life, find a career and undertake the role of father (and I hope husband to your child) as you "grow" forward.

Sincerely,

Greg Scripp

Can he maybe suit up for senior day, and still come out and kiss the "s"?

Reply September 29, 2011 at 06:31 PM prace said...

WOW. who gives a crap about the impact on the team. That's a conversation for another day. do you know how bad its gotta be for a Snr captain do make this decision weeks before practice starts? That plus the family thing must just be a huge drain on him. And again, MSU responds with class. That's why I'm a Spartan.

That is what I was thinking and feel the same way.

It's going to be very sad not to see Delvon suiting up this winter. Wish him nothing but the best for him and his family. Hopefully, his acting career blossoms and we see him in many movies.

Delvon was/is a Spartan. What greater compliment can we give him.

Huge bummer for Delvon Roe! It's undoubtedly a good decision, though. You have the rest of your life to look forward too, Delvon. This chapter is done but the rest of your book is yet to be written.

1 comment:

  1. For all of his success, you just have to wonder sometimes if Tom Izzo is under a curse to always have to climb a steep hill to get anywhere.

Let's say Delvon Roe did exactly what he just did in any normal year. Okay, it's a loss, and quantifiably large as he was a Senior and a Forward. But we would absorb his minutes and slightly elevate a few players and move on.

But this is not a "normal year". A highly ranked Freshman, already recruited, committed, and signed, has already decided to take some time off. Mister Basketball (2011), Duwaun Anderson, a four-star recruit, just recently withdrew his name from the roster. Again, that loss on it's own was disappointing, at least in the short term, but we were going to be able to move forward.

Now two players who were going to take maybe 35 minutes of playing time are suddenly gone. A grizzled veteran and a promising youngster.

These same decisions, made anywhere from 6-12 months earlier, may have had no discernible effects. Either by itself would have been a manageable problem. But there is no way to recoup these losses.

No matter how severe you may consider these losses to be, there is no doubt that their full impact will be felt, as there is nothing that can be done with those scholarships this season that will in any way replace their intended use.
